The epitome of the alpha male may not be the leader we thought he was. SAMSON analyses the myth of James Bond.
This 23rd March, Southbank Centre is celebrating over 50 years of James Bond music in a concert they decided to name simply ‘’The Best of James Bond’’ - while also paying tribute to other great spies who inspired generations.
If you were raised around the cult of 007, you will want to ensure you attend. But for those of you who wish to resemble the British secret agent - listen to the disturbing reality of who James Bond really is.
We will all agree Bond movies have created an incredibly influential series - starting in the United Kingdom and thereafter expanding around the globe. However, this portrayal of the Alpha Male in the films, video games and comics is so extreme that it nearly becomes artificial. After a closer look at the secret agent, you will realise he is nothing more than a myth and start wondering how the producers have managed to trick the entire world.
You might catch Dwayne Johnson ridiculing the ultimate spy’s strong, rich and successful persona, depicted in the brilliant movies. Cold, emotionless, sarcastic. Bond’s social skills are undermined by his personality’s darker side, which in real life would seriously curtail his legendary success with women.
The spy manages to infiltrate circles and stop criminals around the world by playing the strong, rich British gentleman, but the money is not his own. As well as giving him free pass on credit cards and cash, his company, Mi5 and the Foreign Office dictate his successive missions.
Not the boss - Bond must follow orders, he is not the leader we all picture at first glance.
To top it off, our hero is a chain-smoker and an excessive drinker. If you wanted to be Mr. Bond, you will most likely envy him no longer!
